Purple Jumpers and Things

21Oct

I had my RSA Training yesterday. It meant I had to get up earlier than I otherwise would, being at 10 when my lecture wasn’t til 2, but it was ok. We were basically taught how to use the House on the Hill software, and told what to do etc, and given our bright purple jumpers and t-shirts with “University of Portsmouth Information Services ResNet Service Advisor” written on the front and “www.port.ac.uk/mobile” on the back. We also got our Campus cards, so that’s another one I own!

Our lecture was incredibly boring and I really don’t think I need to go to it! We learnt about bold tags, italic tags and strikethrough tags, including tables and hyperlinks, all of which are the very basics of web design, and I hope that this website at least conveys some of the knowledge of HTML that I have…

The main thing that annoys me about the lectures though, is that he is teaching us bad coding habits already. He’s teaching us to code with tags in UPPERCASE when they ought to be in lowercase. He’s teaching us that we don’t NEED to close every tag, when we ought to. It’s just good coding practice, like commenting your C code or something.

Anyway… After that lecture was over, I had my first spot on RSA Duty. We posted some leaflets through doors, but other than that there was nothing to do, as no-one knows we were there to help! I just sat on my laptop doing some coding for this site (notice that the comments are now full width?!) and chatting to Edwin, who is currently writing his own Operating System :S clever guy.

Dan and I played pool down Gunwharf for an hour, he won 5 and i won 2, and the two I won, one because he potted the black, and other was because we were both on the black and he was making stupid mistakes. So, a day later, *still* rubbish at pool!

Oh well, one day maybe.

Ben, I sympathise with lecturers not knowing what they’re talking about. Throughout my degree I’ve had similiar experiences, but you have to remember that the people teaching you usually have no workplace experience, only academic experience. Of course that means you have to learn things the way they teach them to pass the exam, but just remember that the world probably does things differently!

Unfortunately, if your lecturer is talking about HTML then he’s right. If he’s talking about XHTML then tags MUST be in lowercase and all tags MUST be closed. It might be worth bringing that up and seeing if he squirms or if he does actually know that!
