Big Band Gangster Gig

25Oct

First time I’ve played in a gig in a long time! We were playing at the Registry, and it was *packed*, it took longer than 15 minutes to get to the bar meaning I didn’t get a drink all night… We were all dressed in black with white ties and blues brother’s type hats… We played the following pieces, if you’re interested:
Student Cell Group

  • The A-Team *
  • Ain’t Misbehaving
  • Fly Me To The Moon *
  • Girl From Ipanema *
  • Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square *
  • Route 66 *
  • When I Fall In Love
  • It Don’t Mean a Thing *
  • Mercy Mercy Mercy
  • Here, There and Everywhere *
  • Stompin’ At The Savoy *
  • Pennsylvania 6-5000 *
  • Gospel John
  • Blues In Beat
  • I Can’t Turn You Loose
  • Rocky (Gonna Fly Now)
  • Down The Road *
  • I Feel Good
  • The Stripper *
  • Birdland
  • Born To Be Wild
  • Odyssey *
  • Hakuna Matata
  • Rock Around The Clock
  • Watermelon Man
  • New York, New York
  • Build Me Up, Buttercup *
  • Nobody Knows *

The pieces with the * are the pieces I have never played or even seen before tonight. Sight reading is fun! …

Work today was more interesting than last friday - we had 3 calls, all within the first 5 minutes, and one was James Watson, so my responsibility. But a lot of it was spent talking to Lorrain and some gay guy called Alec… And Dad rung and came to give me something that I had printed on his printer.

We had our first lab session this morning. We had 2 hours work to do, which Dan, Jon and I finished in roughly an hour, but we forgot to write up in our log book as we went along… So we then had to do that. It was a fun session :) we had to copy some code onto the PC, simulate it, translate it, build it, and then write it onto a MicroController and then run it, testing the output with a logic probe and an Oscilloscope. Then we had to modify the code to output two signals instead of just one, the second one being twice the frequency. Dan seemed impressed at my coding skills again because I managed to change the code in hardly any time at all, but its just logic reasoning :)

When we wrote our second code, it didn’t work first time :( it wouldn’t simulate… then we realised that we hadn’t translated and built the new program… so we had to write in our log books “simulation not working, why?! forgot to translate program” which made us sound stupid but never mind!

Martin had to stamp our log books at the end to say how far we got each day… woo :)

Oh yea, photos of the cell are on Flickr, here and here.

Sound’s like you need this ;¬)

BTW the gig sounds like fun. There’s little more exciting that being asked to play something you nevermet before in front of an audience. :-/ But some of that material is cool and good to do. Hope you had a ‘Keef’ guitar player for Route 66.

:D
