I thought colours were supposed to work together if they were mathematically worked out? I have a Photoshop Action (I can never remember where I got it from otherwise i’d link to it… aha, here!) that, given a starting colour, works out all the complementary etc colours to match the first one. But look at the output from the action given the colour #961212:

Yet if I put any of those colours together with the original (other than the monochromatic ones) it just looks hideous…
