Don’t get the NetGear “recommended” router if you live in halls. Here’s a test we performed during normal usage of the router today.

14:30 Test commences, no internet access
14:32 Router back up of its own accord
14:47 Lose access to Internet
14:49 Router back up due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again
14:52 Router dies
14:54 Router back up due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again
15:00 Router dies
15:02 Router back up due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again
There was a break here because we went out...
17:32 Return to the flat, router dead.
17:34 Router back up due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again
17:55 Router dies again...
17:58 Router back up due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again
18:30 Router intermittant and internet very very slow
18:34 Router dies completely
18:36 Router back up again due to unplugging the router and plugging it in again

Now thats not what I call a good surfing environment. And the internet is STILL not up enough for me to use GTalk.

what’s a router?

Dan

Livi – It’s a little device that sits between my LAN (Local Area Network) and the tinterweb (Much larger Network). It deals with all the external connections basically.

Like so:

[[LAN]] {{Router}} [[Tinterweb]]

Hope that helps

Or in laymans terms, it lets you connect more than one computer to the internet using only one telephone line
