The fear of being different
I was watching X-men 2 for the first time today, and it got me thinking - what is it about humans which make them fear that which is different?
Is it inherent in human nature to immediately fear something that is different from us? Many people in the film feared the mutants, simply because they were different - one young boy even rang the police when he found out his brother was a mutant - but surely that didn’t change who the boy was, his brother?
What is it about the human race which makes us fear change. Why does that fear sometimes turn to hatred? Why, because we fear something, should we immediately hate it and try to suppress it?
I don’t understand. X-men may be only a film, but the issues of fearing something different are true. It makes me think. What happened to all the good-will and love?!
Hmm, I’m not too sure it’s all change that fears us but just certain changes, mainly those that change our ideas and beliefs. I’m thinking of the Pharisees as a prime example. Other changes though can be good and welcomed but I suspect these are changes we invoke ourselves.
I’d be scared of Xmen cos of the things like the claws and stuff… think thats justified scaredness!
