Sleeping Monkey

Sleeping Monkey Presents...

Films

Jan 18 2009

Annie and I go to the cinema quite a bit, so this year she decided she wanted to keep track of what we’ve been to see. I thought I’d write a post about the ones we’ve seen so far, and perhaps turn it into a plugin.

Yes Man – 3rd January

Yes Man

As IMDB says: A guy challenges himself to say “yes” to everything for an entire year. It was good, very funny, with the usual kind of Jim Carey humour. When I’d seen the trailer, it was one of those films where you think they may have put all the funny bits in the trailer, not leaving any for the actual film – but it wasn’t. I enjoyed it!

Slumdog Millionaire – 12th January

Slumdog Millionaire

The story of the life of an impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik, who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to be A Millionaire?”, wins, and is then suspected of cheating. This is another really good film. It tells the story of this Indian guy from the slums, and as the police question him about each answer he gave on Millionaire, and how he knew the right one, his back-story unfolds; until the questions lead up to the present day. Really good to watch, some comedy parts but not many.

Seven Pounds – 17th January

Seven Pounds

This is one film where the trailer gives nothing away, and you have no idea what the film is about; but it leaves you curious to know. It’s Will Smith, so it’s bound to be good! IMDB doesn’t give much away either, simply saying: An IRS agent with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers. But if you want to go see this, don’t read either IMDB or Wikipedia! It’s a really powerful film – similar to The Pursuit of Happyness. If The Pursuit made you cry, this one will too. Really really good.

All three, well worth a watch. However, I’d say it’s a tough choice between Slumdog Millionaire and Seven Pounds as to which was the best of this post.
